Toros Take Down Cal Baptist and Point Loma Nazarene on Day One of UCSD Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LA JOLLA -- Senior Elizabeth Krieger's 15 kills and 15 digs led Cal State Dominguez Hills as the Toros survived a 5-set thriller against Cal Baptist before sweeping past Point Loma Nazarene to take two wins on day one of the UCSD Invitational to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The last time the Toros opened a season with a 5-1 mark was in 2005, with the squad posting a 7-1 record en route to an 8-2 start in its first 10 matches.

CSUDH bested CBU 26-24, 25-14, 22-25, 14-25, 15-12, while taking a convincing 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 win over the Sea Lions after PLNU took a 5-set thriller over the Toros in its Seaside Invitational last week.

Against Cal Baptist, CSUDH roared to a 2-games-to-none lead in a tale of disparate games, taking a nail-biting 26-24 opener before rolling to a 25-14 win in game two.

The Lancers, however, returned the favor after winning their first game in a tightly-fought contest, and evening up the match at 2-2 after a 25-14 game four win.

The Toros stormed to a 5-1 lead in the deciding game on an ace by Dana Brown and two kills by Abbey Prusa.  CBU fought back with three consecutive points, before a pair of Lancer attack errors gave CSUDH breathing room at 8-5.

The Lancers forged one final rally to tie the game at 11-all, but a Brown kill, CBU serving error and putaways by seniors Krieger and Prusa ended any hope of a Lancer comeback in the 15-12 final.

Prusa added 13 kills and 3 block assists, with Whitney Lee chipping in 12 kills.  Newcomer Alijah Gunsaulus paced the defense with 16 digs while adding 11 kills of her own, with Dana Brown finishing with 53 assists in the win.

In the rematch against the Sea Lions, PLNU regrouped from an early deficit in the opening stanza to take a 13-9 lead, before th Toros stormed back on the strong serving of Hillary Domecus to take a 14-13 lead.

The two teams stayed tight the remainder of the game until the Toros held game point on a Whitney Lee blast at 24-21, surviving a pair of PLNU points before putting the game away on a kill by Alijah Gunsaulus.

Game two was all CSUDH as it stormed out to an 8-3 lead on another Gunsaulus blast, stretching it to 20-11 on four straight points off Lee's serve before taking game two 25-14.

The third contest looked to be a mirror image of the opener as the teams tied three times early.  Another strong service rotation by Lee gave CSDUH a 13-10 lead, with PLNU attack errors and blasts by Lee and Krieger proved too tough an offense to overcome in the eventual 25-18 result.

Gunsaulus finished with 16 kills and just two errors, with Kriger adding 13 kills and three errors.  The Toros hit .389 in the sweep while holding PLNU to just a .139 hitting percentage.

CSUDH continues the UCSD Invitational tomorrow, beginning with a 10 am match against Fresno Pacific, followed by a 2:30 pm contest against Alaska Anchorage.
