Volleyball on Wrong End of 3-1 Result at CS Monterey Bay

Box Score

SEASIDE -- Outside Alijah Gunsaulus paced visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills with 14 kills, but host Cal State Monterey Bay out-hit the Toros in three of the four sets played tonight en route to a 3-1 win.

With the loss, CSUDH drops to 8-16, 1-15 CCAA.

Like most of their matches of late, the Toros went toe-to-toe with their opponent to open the contest, holding an 11-10 lead on a CSUMB error before the hosts went on a 7-2 run to take control en route to a 25-20 win after out-scoring the Toros 5-1 to close the set.

Set two saw the Toros creep closer to victory after holding a 17-16 lead on a Gunsaulus putaway, but the Otters scored four straight points to seize control before holding off the Toros in the 25-23 win.

After the break, CSUDH turned the tables on its host by turning a 4-4 tie into a 15-10 lead on an Azieanna Smith blast, and stretching its lead to as much as 24-15 on a Gunsaulus kill before another Smith hammer gave the Toros a 25-18 lead and cut CSUMB's set lead to two to one.

The Otters, however, regrouped in set four, outhitting the Toros .282 to .047, trailing just once in the frame at 3-2 before opening up a close set late in the 25-15 win.

Tarryn Luafalemana added 10 kills while Korryne Kelley led defensively with 18 digs in the loss.  Gunsaulus chipped in with 14 digs and Elizabeth Krieger 10 saves, but CSUMB making 15 less hitting errors proved the difference in the four-set decision.

CSUDH will look to snap its skid tomorrow night at Cal State East Bay, with first serve set for 7 pm.
