CARSON -- Sophomore Alijah Gunsaulus and senior Whitney Lee combined for 43 kills as Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up its first league win of the year in a stirring 3-1 win over a game Cal State East Bay club.

With the win, CSUDH moves to 8-6, 1-5 CCAA, while CSUEB dips to 6-8, 2-4 CCAA.

The Toros started quickly on a warm night in the Torodome, erasing an early 2-1 deficit and turning it into a 14-7 lead behind a pair of kills from newcomer Alijah Gunsaulus, and stretching it to 18-8 on two more Gunsaulus putaways.

Leading 19-9, an overpass off a Dana Brown serve led to an Abbey Prusa smash, giving CSUDH firm control of the first set en route to a convincing 25-12 set one win with Gunsaulus finishing with eight kills in the frame.

Set two saw the Pioneers stay competitive in the early going, until a block assist by Whitney Lee and Brown, followed by a Lee hammer gave the hosts an 8-5 lead.

The Pioneers would answer back with five-straight points for a 10-8 lead, until another Lee hammer stopped the East Bay tide.

The set was tied at 18-all, when a Toro attack error and an East Bay kill prompted a CSUDH time out, a respite that paid dividends after Lee smashed a ball for Toro point, momentum that led to a 21-21 all, and a Pioneer time out.

CSUEB benefited with a kill by Suzy Ni Xu, before Gunsaulas answered to tie the set again, with her ensuing tough serve handcuffing the Pioneer receiver that led to a 23-22 Toro edge.

The Pioneers, however, used a 6-3 run to close the set and even the match heading into intermission.

Set three saw the guests take a 6-1 lead early, until Pioneer errors allowed the Toros to claw back into the frame, eventually knotting the set at 12-all on an Elizabeth Krieger hammer.

CSUDH built a 21-17 lead on a putaway by Tarryn Luafalemana before holding on for the 25-21 win to go up a set.

The fourth set saw the Toros continue their momentum en route to a 9-6 lead, only to have the Pioneers catch CSUDH at 17-all.

Three errors and an ace by Hillary Domecus gave the Toros control at 21-17, with Domecus serving out the set en route to the 25-18 win.

Gunsaulus finished with 22 kills with Lee added 21 in the win, with Domecus' three aces and team-high 13 digs contributing to the team effort.

As a team, CSUDH hit .333 compared to just .182 for the guests, with Dana Brown dishing 56 assists.

CSUDH will conclude their five-match homestand tomorrow night against CS Monterey Bay, with tomorrow also serving as "Dig For A Cure" night to help raise breast cancer awareness.
