Toros Drop Intense Four-Setter to No. 10 UC San Diego

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior Whitney Lee led the Toros with a stellar .455 hitting percentage to go along with her 12 kills, but visiting and 10th-ranked UC San Diego came up huge when it needed to in handing the Toros a 3-1 loss tonight in the Torodome.

With the setback, CSUDH falls to 8-10 overall and 1-9 CCAA.

The first set was all UC San Diego as the Tritons ran off the set's first six points and built that lead to 13-2 before running away with the 25-15 first set win.

The hosts showed life in set two, building an early 5-2 lead behind an Azieanne Smith kill before UCSD went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead.

Successive errors by UCSD brought the Toros back to an 8-8 tie, a theme that recurred as neither team was able to separate from the other down the stretch.

An Elizabeth Krieger service aces gave the Toros a 17-16 lead and prompted a Triton time out, and an ensuing Krieger blast pushed CSUDH's edge to 18-16.

The Tritons, however, came back to tie the game at 19, and erased a 21-19 deficit with a Danielle Dahle service ace and kill to bring UCSD to a 24-21 lead, with Caitlin Brenton painting the back line in the 25-21 set two win.

After the break, the Toros took control of set three, turning a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead on a Whitney Lee service ace.

That momentum continued after a pair of Triton errors pushed CSUDH's lead to 10-7, with a Lee blast keeping UCSD two down at 12-10, and one from Tarryn Luafalemana bringing the Toro lead to 16-13.

Another Luafalemana blast, this one an absolute hammer, gave CSUDH a 17-15 edge, setting the stage for the 25-21 Toro set three win with setter Hillary Domecus putting the finishing touches on the set with a no-look dink that nestled between a quintet of Tritons.

Set four looked to be a repeat of the opener as UCSD took a 6-0 lead, before a Lee hammer and ace by Krieger got the Toros on the board.  The Tritons regrouped, however with four-straight points to take a 9-2 lead, stretching it to 12-5 before a Krieger blast ended the run.

CSUDH continued to charge back behind Krieger and Lee, a winning joust by Taryn McCullouch and a solo block by Corissa Santos to bring the Toros to within three at 18-15, with two Santos aces and a block assist by the two Tar(r)yns knotting the set at 19-all.

Another Santos ace gave CSUDH a 20-19 lead, with kills by Luafalamena and Lee bringing the Toros to within three points of tying the match at 22-20.

But the Tritons held firm and withstood a late Toro run in taking set four 26-24, and the match, 3-1.

Krieger finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Luafalemana added 8 kills, 2 digs and 2 block assists.

CSUDH's homestand doesn't get any easier tomorrow night as No. 14 CS San Bernardino visits the Torodome, with first serve set for 7 pm.
