Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SAN DIEGO -- Junior middle Whitney Lee put away 9 balls while fellow junior Abbey Prusa followed with 8 kills and a .467 hitting percentage as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team swept past Southern Nazarene to open its 2012 season before falling in a 3-2 thriller to Azusa Pacific in the nightcap.

Juniors Elizabeth Krieger and Lee led the offense with 22 kills each on the day, with Lee chipping in 8 block assists and a pair of solo stuffs.

The first set of the opener (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) saw 7 ties before SNU built a 20-15 lead on a Taylor Chase bomb, but the Toros went on a 10-2 run to close the set, bolstered by the strong serving of Rose Greco and Lee.

After CSUDH picked up a relatively easy set two win, SNU continued to battle in set three, forging eight ties late before Krieger and Korryne Kelley's serves proved too much an obstacle to overcome in the 25-20 finale, and three set sweep.

The nightcap against Azusa Pacific (24-26, 29-27, 25-23, 12-25, 13-15) saw the Toros take two of three close sets before the Cougars ran away with a 25-12 fourth set to knot the contest, hanging on for a 15-13 set five win that saw nine ties, the latest at 13-13.

Krieger led the Toros with 16 kills in the loss, while Lee's five block assists and a solo block paced the Toros to a 16-10 overall edge at the net.

Newcomer Dana Brown posted 44 assists with fellow newcomer Kelly leading all back row players with 28 digs.

The Toros conclude the Point Loma-hosted tournament with a pair of matches tomorrow, facing the Lions in the 7 pm nightcap.
