Gators Hold On for 39-35 Win Over Toros

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team was looking to secure a win in their final weekend of play, but was not able to do it Wednesday night after a 39-35 loss to the San Francisco State Gators.

They remain at the bottom of the pack at 2-19 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 3-25 overall.  The Gators are now 7-14 in CCAA play, 8-19 overall.  Both teams will wrap up their 2011-12 season Friday night.

Leading for the Toros once again was junior guard Porcha Davis with 11 points, eight of which came in the first half.

The Toros took an early four-point lead in the first session, but the Gators seized control at the 10 minute mark, enjoying an 8-0 run that gave the hosts a 7-point lead.

A triple by Davis and jumper by Hillarie Perrin-Grant brought CSUDH to within two, giving the visitors momentum as they entered the break down 19-18.

To begin the second half the Toros took a lead, but could not hold on for long.  The score became tied at 17:16 for the first and only time in regulation.  Although CSUDH kept the game close and kept pressure on the Gators, after the 15 minute mark in the second half they were unable to ever take the lead again, resulting in the 39-34 San Francisco State win.

On the boards is where the Toros shined, out-rebounding the Gators 49-35.  Senior post Sherrie Hughes was the leader with the game high of 16 rebounds, 11 of which were defensive grabs.  Contributing with eight rebounds was Dominguez Hills leading scorer Porcha Davis (pictured) followed closely by freshman Ella Rodriguez with seven boards on the night.

Both teams took advantage of turnovers, with the Toros reaching for 15 steals.  Davis led as well with six steals and Hughes had three.  San Francisco State tallied more steals on the night, but that was caused by as many as 36 turnovers by the Toro team.

Contributing offensively to the close game was Rodriguez and Zipporah Brown with seven points apiece.  Hughes also layed in six points.

Offensively, the San Francisco team was balanced with Micheala Booker leading with eight points followed by Farrah Shokoor and Lauren Varney with seven points each.  Leading under the basket was Shokoor with 14 boards in the contest.

The Toros will wrap up their 2011-12 season tomorrow night on the road when they return to southern California to take on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
