Otters Drop Toros in Four Sets

Box Score
SEASIDE -- Cal State Monterey Bay hit .262 on the night and held visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to just .106 in the Otters' 25-17, 17-25, 25-16, 25-13 win over the Toros, CSUDH's fourth-straight loss.  Whitney Lee put away 11 balls in the loss.

CSUDH falls to 9-13, 7-8 CCAA, while CSUMB improves to 12-11, 6-9 CCAA.

Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen led a strong all-around team effort, notching her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills while matching her career high with 17 digs. Both totals led all players Saturday. Freshman middle blocker Janai Johnson hit .357 with a season-high 13 kills and sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston chipped in a 40-assist, 11-dig double-double of her own.

Even with the solid play of that trio, it was freshman outside hitter Jessica Malcolm who carried the Otters early. Malcolm recorded seven of her 11 kills in the first set, including a heater on set point to get the Otters rolling early with a 25-17 win.

Dominguez Hills used a quick 6-1 spurt midway through set two to pull away for its own 25-17 win and even the match at one set apiece. But CSUMB turned the tables in set three using a pair of Johnson kills as a springboard to a 9-2 run that broke open a 10-10 tie, allowing the Otters to take the third set and control of the match.

CSUMB didn't wait nearly as long to blow open the decisive fourth set, using a 10-0 run to open a commanding 14-4 lead that wouldn't be challenged.

Korryne Kelley led the Toro backrow with 14 digs.

The Toros will continue CCAA road action next weekend at San Francicso State and Sonoma State.
