Jacks Stop Toros' Win Streak at One After 65-60 Decision

Box Score
CARSON -- The euphoria of last night's first conference win lasted all of 24 hours after visiting Humboldt State took a 65-60 win tonight in Carson.  Ashley Hudson led the Toros with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field in the loss.

After the weekend split for both teams, the Toros are 1-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 2-13 overall.  The Lumberjacks are now 6-2 in the CCAA and 10-2 overall.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a challenge on their hands against a strong offensive Lumberjack team.  Within the first four minutes of play Humboldt State drained a three and made two from the key to take an 11-point lead.

With the largest deficit of 14 points at 12:11 in the first half, the Toros were not able to come within eight points after 17:21 and wrapped up the first half down nine points at 31-22.

The Toros brought new life in the second half and continued to challenge a strong Humboldt State offense.  Eventually the Toros came within six points after a Lumberjack foul placed Toro senior Zipporah Brown on the foul line.  After the two made shots by Brown, Humboldt State answered back with an eight-point run to bring the Toro deficit back to 14 points.

Cal State Dominguez Hills' Porcha Davis gave the Toros one last glimmer of hope with just 1:11 remaining in the game after a made three-pointer brought CSUDH back within six points.  The two teams battled at each end of the court for the final minute, but in the end the Toros fell 60-65.

Defensively, the Toros out-played their opponent for the second night in a row.  They out-rebounded HSU 32-29 and recorded 12 steal to the Lumberjacks' 10.  Tiffany Smith led the Toros with six rebounds on the night while three Toros in Sherrie Hughes, Brown, and Hudson all contributed with five boards.  Brown also snagged three steals for the game.

In addition to Hudson's season high night of 17 points was junior guard Porcha Davis and sophomore forward Lyndsay Heard with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  This was Heard's second consecutive double-digit night for the Toros.

Inevitably, it was the Lumberjack offense that grabbed the win for the visitors.  As a team they shot 40 percent from the floor and were 9-for-20 from behind the arc.  Leading the 'Jacks was Lisa Petty with 22 points, with Caitie Richards right behind with 19 points.  Kayla Williams dished out six assists in addition to her 10 points for Humboldt.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team will travel north to take on the Chico State Wildcats Friday night and Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night.
