Toros End Regular Season With 1-0 Win at CS Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Senior All-American #Jessica Murphy# separated herself from the CS Monterey Bay defense in the 65th minute and connected far post for the game's lone score in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 1-0 win over the host Otters, concluding the regular season.

Now, the long and agonizing wait begins to see if Friday's loss at Cal State East Bay was enough to knock the Toros from their No. 6 seed in the NCAA West Region poll, released last week.

Under perfect beach-like conditions, similar to Bakersfield if Kern County had perfect beach weather, the two teams endured a defensive first-half struggle that produced just 6 shots total, with five going for the Cardinal and Gold as the squads played the first 45 minutes to a scoreless draw.

After the break, however, the Otters increased their shots by two, including two shots in the first 15 minutes of play.

In the 65th minute, however, CSUDH's first shot proved to be the difference as an unmarked Murphy collected a #Taylor Canatsey# corner kick, and deposited it into the far post for a 1-0 lead.

The CSUDH defense did the rest, limiting the Otters to just a single shot the rest of the half.

Overall, the Toros enjoyed 10-4 shot and 5-3 corner kick edges, with Toro keeper #Tiffany Hollis# notching 3 saves compared to 4 by counterpart Kendra Gillio.

With Murphy's score, she sits just one goal and one point away from tying former Toro All-American Amy Rubin (1989-92) for the most goals and points in CSUDH history.

CSUDH, now 9-8-1, 7-7-1 CCAA, will wait for mid-week for the next NCAA West Region poll to see how much Friday's surprise loss at CSUEB hurt its chances at making the top 6.
