Volleyball Pushes Cal State L.A. in Four-Set Loss

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team took on their cross-town rival in a rare Tuesday evening contest with the visitors getting the better of the match-up.  The Toros fell to the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. in four sets (25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17) despite CSUDH taking early leads in each set. Junior middle blocker Delea Pursel had an efficient night, smashing 10 kills without an error on only 15 swings.

Set one began strongly for the Toros as they took an early 7-5 lead thanks to some solid passing and defense.  However, the Golden Eagles responded to the deficit by scoring 11 of the next 12 points to turn the set around and roll to a 25-13 victory.  Senior Olivia White had a team-high five assists in the set.

The second set started better than the first with CSUDH quickly jumping to a 9-4 lead thanks to an efficient attack.  They would maintain their lead until the past the halfway point of the match at 15-11.  That's when CSULA responded with a 14-2 run to win the second set 25-17 and take a two sets to none lead.  Pursel led the team with four kills on only six swings.

Facing a two-set deficit, the Toros started the set in rhytm and took another lead past the halfway point of the match.  This time CSUDH continued to score points and with their lead down to two points at 16-14, they scored five-straight before holding on to take the third set 25-19.  Sophomore Abbey Prusa was stellar, smashing a team-high five kills on only nine swings.

In set four CSUDH grinded out a 5-3 lead before CSULA made yet another set-changing run, scoring nine of the next 11 points to take the lead at 12-7.  That would not be the end of the match as CSULA errors combined with Toros kills made for five-straight for the Cardinal and Gold to tie the score at 12 apiece.  All the momentum the Toros gained stopped there as CSULA scored eight-straight points and took the fourth and final set 25-17.  Prusa again led the team with three kills on only six swings.

For the match Prusa led the team with 12 kills at a solid .360 clip while Pursel smashed down 10 balls at a rate of .667.  Freshman Azieanna Smith had nine kills to go along with a team-high two aces and two block assists.  Senior Cassidy Mangum led the team with 12 digs.  As a team CSUDH was outhit .314 to .198 and was outblocked eight to three.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to the Torodome this Friday night, October 28, against Humboldt State, with the match set to begin at 7:00 pm.
