Murphy Hangs Five on SFSU in 6-2 "Senior Day" Win

Senior All-American now in 4-way tie for CSUDH single game goals record, and 3 away from tying Toros all-time career mark

CARSON -- Playing in her final home game of her stellar four-year career, senior All-American #Jessica Murphy# nearly ran out of hats as she tallied a career-best 5 goals in a 6-2 win over San Francisco State, placing her in a four-way tie for the Cal State Dominguez Hills record for most goals in a single game.

The win brings the Toros to a tie for fourth place in the CCAA's South Division at 8-7-1, and 6-7-1 CCAA, with two regular season games left.

Murphy wasted little time in getting her fellow seniors off on the right foot, taking a #Taylor Canatsey# cross that the SFSU defense failed to clear and blasting it past SFSU keeper Annicia Jones near post for a 1-0 lead at the 10:46 mark.

Less than five minutes later, Murphy was at it again as she dribbled down the left side of the pitch and sent her shot from inside the box past Jones for a 2-nil edge at 15:06.

The Torrance native then completed her first-career hat trick six minutes later after making her way into the box and chipping it over Jones' head at the 21:50 mark to give CSUDH a 3-0 lead entering the break.

Just five minutes into the second half, #Bailey Butcher sent the ball to Yadira Gomez# up the right sideline, where Gomez proceeded to dribble past the SFSU defense.

Approaching the 18 foot mark down the sideline, Gomez crossed the ball to Murphy, who one-touched her shot past Jones for her fourth goal of the game at 50:59.

The "quinfecta" became complete, as did tying the CSUDH single-season record, when Butcher again initiated a run that Murphy completed when the Torrance native controlled the ball after a scramble in the Gator box and chipped it past Jones for a 5-0 lead.

The Gators finally got on the scoreboard after CSUDH starting keeper #Tiffany Hollis was relieved by birthday girl Allison Ruvalcaba#, where Kiley Williams won a 50/50 ball and deposted an empty-netter at 68:09.

#Niki Poole#, however, made that momentum short-lived as she collected a Canatsey shot that was deflected by new SFSU keeper Allison Land, and sent it home for a 6-1 lead at 68:51.

SFSU continued to press as Williams sent a Nicole Vanni shot home to account for the final tally.

For the game, CSUDH out-shot the Gators 22-16, although SFSU mounted an 11-10 edge after the break and took a decided 6-1 corner kick edge.

Murphy's five goal effort ties the mark set by Teresa Bateman in 1993, Gwen Nakashima in 1995 and Heather Rolland in 1997, and now gives her 13 goals on the season.

The senior All-American drew inspiration from not only what was her final game in a stadium she's called home for four years, but also from five members of CSUDH's 1991 NCAA National Championship team who were in attendance today that included the Toros' all-time career leading scorer in Amy Rubin, whose 60 goals are three above Murphy's current total of 57 with two games left in the regular season.

Today's game also marked the final home game for fellow seniors #Paige Peel-Hand#, #Colleen McNamee#, #Danielle Shoemaker and Taylor Canatsey#.

The Toros will conclude their regular season on the road next weekend, needing a strong showing and some full story and help to make a run at the CCAA and possibly NCAA postseason.
