Volleyball Unable to Finish Comeback Against Broncos

Sophomore Elizabeth Krieger killed a season-high 19 points on the night

CARSON -- Following a closely fought match on Friday night, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros volleyball team put together another good effort en route to taking a set from visiting Cal Poly Pomona before eventually falling in four sets to CPP.  Sophomore Elizabeth Krieger played some of her best volleyball of the early season, registering her third straight double-double with a season-high 19 kills and 10 digs.

Set one saw the visitors turn a two point lead into a six point one quickly and maintain that solid gap throughout.  The Broncos took set one 25-20 despite both teams hitting over 29% with the slight difference in errors hurting the Toros at eight to seven.  Junior middle blocker Delea Pursel played a great first set with a team-high five kills on only six swings.

In the second set the Broncos jumped out to an early five point lead and never looked back, taking a two sets to none lead with a 25-17 victory.  CPP smashed 19 kills at a .405 clip compared to only nine kills at a rate of .114 for the home team.  Krieger started to warm up in the set as she had four kills and a dig.

The most hotly contested set was the third as neither team led by more than two points until late.  With CSUDH down 20-19, the Toros scored four straight to take a three point lead and were able to just hold on, taking the third set 25-23.  Krieger was the catalyst in the set with a team-high eight kills and seven digs including two kills in the important four point run late.

Cal Poly Pomona was not moved by the new wave of Toro momentum as they quickly took a seven point lead in the fourth set at 15-8.  The Toros would slowly inch closer by scoring eight of the next 12 points to make it a 19-16 set.  However the Broncos flexed their muscles and never allowed CSUDH any closer, winning the fourth and final set 25-20.  Krieger finished the fourth set with another six kills to go along with a dig and block assist.

For the match the Toros hit the ball at a high percentage, but the Broncos were able to do better at .231 compared to .176.  CSUDH did win the battle of the serves with five aces compared to four by the Broncos.

Krieger led the team with her 19 kills to go along with 10 digs, two block assists and an ace.  Freshman Azieanna Smith nearly notched a double-double with nine kills to go along with tying for the team-high in digs with 14.  Pursel and sophomore Abbey Prusa had eight and seven kills respectively with each blocking two attacks.  Senior Olivia White led the team with 40 assists while junior Rose Greco tied for the lead in digs with 14.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, now 1-12 and 0-9 CCAA, will play match three of a six match homestand next Friday, October 7 against Chico State, beginning at 7:00pm in the Torodome.
