Broncos Run Away in 79-45 Win

CARSON -- In a battle of top CCAA point guards, first year starter Nikki Boutte' held her own again two-time 1st Team All-West Region award winner Reyana Colson.  It wasn't enough as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos used a balanced attack led by Colson to defeat the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros 79-45.  Boutte' set a new career high with 18 points on only six shots taken, while dishing out five assists.

Each offense started the game off running smoothly with assists being dished out left and right. Four of the first five made baskets by the teams combined were 3's, including the first three baskets for CSUDH. However with the score 12-9 CPP, the Broncos exploded for a 17-2 run from 15:00 to 7:57 left in the first half. The Toros responded back with a 8-0 run over the next 2:45 to get the margin to only 10 points. Cal Poly Pomona then started feeding the ball to Megan Ford inside leading to the 41-26 score at half. Seven different Broncos scored at least three in the half while Boutte' led the Toros with 10 points and two assists in the half.


CPP came out on a surge to start the second, starting the half on a 16-1 run over the first six plus minutes to send the margin ballooning to 30. Turnovers did in the Toros as they committed 15 in the second half alone, 26 total for the game. Cal Poly Pomona forced 17 steals including 11 in the second half. CSUDH did not attempt a free throw in the second half.


For the game the Toros shot 38.1% from the field and 46.7% (7-15) from behind the arc. CPP shot 48.3% for the game and 38.5% from three. The Toros once again won the rebounding battle 34-31 but lost the assist battle 19-11.


Boutte' led the team with her 18 points and was the only Toro with more than six points. Junior Ashley Hudson had six points and a tied for the team high with four rebounds.


Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to action on Dave Yanai Court Saturday night December 4th at 5:30pm against Cal State San Bernardino, who defeated Cal State L.A. on a buzzer beating jumper on Friday, 60-58.
