Toros Nearly Tear Down Eagles Nest in 3-2 Loss to Cal State L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- Historically a national powerhouse, Cal State L.A. met its match tonight as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball program grabbed two early set wins, only to have the hosts roar back for a 3-2 win.  Denise DeVine (pictured) led the Toros, grabbing her seventh double-double with 23 kills and 17 digs.

The near win almost ended a 19-year drought after the Toros last bested the Golden Eagles on November 12, 1991.

Despite the loss the Toros nearly shut out the Eagles, a team that was nationally-ranked five straight weeks to start the 2010 season.

Aside from DeVine's 23 kills, Elizabeth Krieger landed 16 for CSUDH, a new personal season-best for her.

Shining from the line, the Toros grabbed 12 service aces to the Eagles three, led by Celeste Tuioti-Mariner with six.

Defensively, Hilary Hougardy played a close second to DeVine with 16 digs on the night.

The Toros easily managed positive hitting in all five sets at a respective .333, .323, .200, .132 and .111 with just 23 errors as a team, one of their lowest of the season.

After a hard fought win in set one at 25-23, the Toros grabbed the largest margin of victory on the night in the second, besting the Eagles 25-13.

CSUDH also held the biggest lead of the night overall, holding 12 points over CSULA on five separate occasions.

Now 1-13 overall and in the 1-8 CCAA, the Toros will play host this weekend as they take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Friday at 3:00pm to begin the two-game homestead.
