Win Number Three Slips Late as Broncos Best Toros in 5-Set Thriller

POMONA -- Looking to take down the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos twice this season and grab their third win of the season, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's volleyball program battled through five sets of neck-and-neck volleyball before a 3-2 loss.  With her second double-double of the season, Elaine Hicks led with 19 kills and 18 digs.

The Toros landed more kills than their hosts, 61 to 53, while also besting them in aces nine to seven, but errors and blocks gave way to the eventual loss.

Taking the first set by a 25-21 margin, the Toros looked poised to grab the second as well after rallying from a 24-23 deficit to tie the game.

The Broncos came back with their own push to grab the second at 26-24, carrying the momentum into a 25-21 third set victory.

Never relinquishing the lead in the fourth set, the Toros grabbed their biggest lead of the night at 24-18 off a Denise DeVine kill with Abbey Prusa landing the final blow for a 25-19 win.

The Toros grabbed the lead twice in the deciding set, with Prusa once again providing the final say for CSUDH with a kill, but it was not enough with the Broncos taking the set at 15-12.

Aside from Hicks, DeVine and Prusa landed double-digit kills with respective 18 and 12, while both Hicks and DeVine led all players from both teams on the night.

On the floor five Toros clocked in at 10-plus digs, with DeVine's 22 pacing CSUDH, Hicks at 18 and both Hilary Hougardy and setter Olivia White at 11 apiece.

Kristin McNeese led the hosts with 13 kills while Kelly Bonja grabbed 22 digs.

Now 2-18 overall and 2-13 in the CCAA, the Toros will host next week as they take on Chapman University on October 26th at 7:00pm.
