No. 8 Coyotes Too Good in Sweep of Toros

SAN BERNARDINO -- With Halloween just a week away, eighth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino had no fear of attaining win number 13, doing so in business like fashion over the Toros this evening in Coussoulis Arena in front of 565 faithful Coyote fans in a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-15, 25-16).  Freshman Denise DeVine paced the Toros with a match-high 12 kills.

The Yotes wasted little time in taking control of the match, building an 8-1 first set cushion and holding their advantage around a nine-point mark the rest of the way in a 25-16 win.

Things didn't get much better for the Toros in set two as CSUSB jumped out to an early 8-2 cushion, with the Toros getting to as close as five points at 9-4 on an Elaine Hicks bomb before the Yotes would run away with set two, the final point of the 25-15 final coming via a Toro attack error.

Set three saw the Toros take their first lead of the match on the first point of the set, enjoying the view from the top as late as 10-9 on an Abbey Prusa putaway.  The hosts, however, quickly took momentum back after putting together an 11-4 run to take a 20-13 lead, putting away the Toros for good on a Mercedes Winchester kill.

DeVine led all attackers with 12 kills and just three errors, good for a .375 hitting percentage, while Hicks added 9 kills in the loss.

Megan Johnson led the Yotes with 8 kills as the hosts connected for a .446 hitting percentage, making just 8 errors on the night compared to 19 for the Toros.

CSUDH, now 2-17, 2-12 CCAA, looks to make it a sweep over Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow night after the Toros picked up their first win of the season over the Broncos in mid-September.
