Toros Take Down Visiting Gators in 59-49 Win

CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team used a team total of five 3-pointers to grab a 59-49 win over the Gators of San Francisco State and improve their overall record to 4-7 (3-3 CCAA).  Narrowly missing her third straight double-double, Neka Mixon led all Toros with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Allowing the Gators a lead for only 42-seconds in the first half, the Toros controlled the remaining 39:18 of the game, allowing only two tied scores throughout the night.

CSUDH grabbed its biggest lead of the first half at six points, following two good Whitney Gantt freebies, bringing the score to 17-11.

Gantt once again propelled the Toros to their biggest lead of the second half at 53-35, sinking a free throw after a SFSU Kalia Williams foul.

The Gators only lead came way from the line with Carly Cator and Domingue Hunter both going two-of-two in their freebies.

The clinching shot came with 5:56 left in play as a Jessica Cannon feed to a waiting Mixon in three-point land gave CSUDH a 50-35 lead.  SFSU's only three on the night was scored by Juliet Masei, her only points in the game.

With five good shots beyond the arc, Mixon with 3, and MacKenzie Mathias and Kala Amico with one apiece helped to push the Toros to the win.

The final game-decider came in steals, Mixon grabbed four while Barbara Houston added three to CSUDH's total of 13.  The Gators grabbed nine steals on the night.

Leading all scorers, Mixon's 21 points keeps her season average at a healthy 18.0 ppg.  Gantt came in second for CSUDH with 11 while SFSU's Hunter tallied 16.

As the seventh leading team in blocks in the nation prior to the game with 5.5 bbg, the Gators were upset by CSUDH, grabbing only three on the night, all way of leading blocker Hunter.

Overall the Toros shot a combined 37.0% from the field, limiting the Gators to a too-close 29.2%.

The win improves the Toro record to 4-7 (3-3 CCAA) while dropping SFSU to 5-9 (1-5 CCAA).  The Toros will next see action as they host the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay tomorow with tip-off slated for 5:00pm.
