Broncos Run Faster as Toros Open Road Play in 55-45 Loss

POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team couldn't keep up with the host Cal Poly Pomona Broncos as they opened their five-game 2010 road series, cutting a 18-point second half deficit down to ten before suffering a loss at a final of 55-45, dropping them to 3-5 in the CCAA.

The Toros kept up to speed with the host Broncos in the first half, going perfect in their seven attempts from the line to enter the break with a close 23-15 deficit.

Two Whitney Gantt freebies echoed the perfect line shooting for the Toros to cut their first half deficit down from double-digits.

A total of 17 Toro turnovers gave way to five Bronco steals in the first, starting a downhill slope that would lead into the eventual loss.

Coming back from the break, Barbara Houston sank two straight jumpers to give CSUDH the boost it needed and cut their deficit down to a much-healthier 25-19, the closest they would enjoy on the night.

Nearing the last quarter of play, CPP's Stephisha Walton dropped a layup with 8-minutes left in regulation to jump the Broncos up to a 16-point lead at 43-27.

Four-minutes later, Walton once again boosted her team again, this time from the floor, bringing the lead to 46-30.

The Toros were only once able to cut the Bronco lead to under double-digits in the last four-minutes following a Neka Mixon layup.  Mixon also managed to give CSUDH their final two points of the game, taking a solo drive to the basket with :12 left, ending the night on a 55-45 note.

Leading the Toros on the board for the third straight time, Mixon grabbed 12 points and seven boards.

One behind, Brandie McCann tallied 11 points, the only other Toro in double-figures.  Both Gantt and Sherrie Hughes grabbed five boards apiece, contributing to a team total of 35.

Scoring in clutch moments, Walton landed 11-points for the Broncos, far behind that of leader Reyena Colson with 23 points.

The loss moves the Toros to a 4-9 overall mark (3-5 CCAA).  CSUDH will continue road play tomorrow as they take on the 8-5 (4-4 CCAA) Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30pm.
