Toros End Day One of Triton Invitation in Hard-Fought 3-0 Loss to Saginaw Valley State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
LA JOLLA -- Despite an array of injuries that have kept the Toros squad to a minimum, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team used exceptional play in game two of the Triton Invitational to make the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State truly earn their 3-0 win. Madison Horsley led in the nightcap with a double-double at 10 kills and 14 digs.

The Cardinals, who are just shy of a top-25 NCAA Division II ranking, used a total of 11 players on the night and were just able to pull ahead of the Toros' seven who saw action.

Despite the low numbers on the court the Toros were led from the floor by Horsley with 10 kills and Samantha Maxwell with 11. Heather Rushton proved to be a versatile force in the loss with four kills, two blocks and two assists. Also on the defense was Hilary Hougardy, with a team-best 12 digs.

The Toros played their best game of the match in game two as they held a consistent lead until 18-18 when the Cardinals were finally able to take the edge and the game.

Overall the Toros dropped games of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-14 in the 3-0 loss to SVSU.

In match one of the day, despite a positive attack percentage and equal defense at the net, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Northern Michigan in game one of the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. Clark led the Toros with nine attacks and five digs.

Game one was the best show of force on behalf of the Toros with a .143 attack percentage, the Toros' best on the day. Keeping pace with the Wildcats, CSUDH managed to take the game to a 18-17 deficit off a NMU service error.

A final kill from Ashley Clark, assisted by Cassidy Mangum who had 19 sets on the day, would see the Toros to 19 points, before the eventual 25-19 loss.

CSUDH fared no better in games two and three with respective 25-16 and 25-13 losses to end the match.

In her second game in the Cardinal & Gold, newcomer Cambrea Horn anchored the Toro defense at the net with two block-assists, leading the team.

Now with an 0-5 overall record, the Toros will next see action against the University of Alaska-Anchorage as the Triton Invitational continues. First serve is tomorrow at 1:00pm.
