Toros Pick Up Steam in Third Set, But Fall in 3-0 Loss to No. 2 Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Even with a close 25-21 set three loss, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team fell in a 3-0 loss to the No. 2 Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino on the road. Samantha Maxwell led the Toro offense, landing nine kills for the second night in a row.

Although too little, too late, the Toros tallied 12 kills, just shy of the Coyotes' 19, to narrowly miss a game three win at 25-21.

Maxwell's four kills in game three, on par with two of CSUSB's hitters - Rachel Taylor and Mercedes Winchester with four apiece in the final game - gave the Toros a final game hitting percentage of .310, close behind CSUSB's .391.

The Toros struggled with 12 total combined errors in the first two game before falling with scores of 25-9 and 25-12.

A total of five team blocks tallied by CSUDH bested that of the 2008 NCAA national runner-up Coyotes, who managed only three as a team on the night. Leading behind the net was Maxwell with four, while Chelsea Thayer and Cambrea Horn put up respective three and two blocks.

Taking the floor with setting duties tonight, Cassidy Mangum assisted with 15 sets while Hilary Hougardy led the defense with 14 digs.

Now with a 1-15 overall record (1-8 CCAA), the Toros will resume action in one week as they travel to Cal State Stanislaus on October 9. First serve is slated for 7:00pm.
