Pioneers End Toros' Late-Match Surge in 3-1 Loss

HAYWARD, Calif. -- A lone third set win proved not enough as the Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team returned the favor of a early season 3-2 loss in Carson, handing the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros a 3-1 loss. Samantha Maxwell tallied a double-double in the effort with 14 kills and 19 digs.

CSUDH got the pressure going early in the match, hold the Pioneers to a 8-8 tie before slipping behind as East Bay rushed to a 25-19 win.

Forcing the Pioneers to commit errors and using a Rebacca Raymond clean kill, CSUDH rallied from a 19-14 deficit late in the second set before CSUEB once again took the advantage at a final score of 25-17.

After the break, the Toros turned the tables in the third set, grabbing a 25-19 win behind the attacking of Maxwell and Ashley Clark.

With no more energy, CSUDH would walk away with the sole third set win as the Pioneers ended the day on a 25-12 fourth set and a final match score of 3-1.

Maxwell led the Toro effort with 14 kills and 19 digs.  Likewise, Clark tallied 19 digs to bolster the defense.

Overall the Pioneers used 11 team blocks to their advantage while Heather Rushton grabbed two blocks at the net to add to CSUDH's 3.5 as a team.

Now with a 1-22 overall record (1-15 CCAA), the Toros will continue their road travel as they take on the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay next Friday. First serve is set at 7:00pm.
