Toros Make Stand in 3-0 Loss Against No. 2 Tritons

CARSON -- Facing off against the No. 2 team in the nation, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team mustered all the strength they could with seven healthy players in 25-15, 25-20 and 25-13 set losses.  Showing her face at nearly every inch of the hardwood, Cassidy Mangum led the show with three kills, 20 assists, eight digs, and a solo ace & block.

The Tritons ran the score up too quick for the Toros to answer back in set up, taking the lead at 4-3 to finish the set at 25-15.  Reviving a mid-season trend of out-blocking their opponents, Heather Rushton grabbed the set's only block on the night.

With the game nearly decided in favor of UCSD at 22-14, a Rushton kill gave the Toros a shot of momentum capped by kills from Ashley Clark and a service ace from Rushton.

A final Mangum ace in the set, following her solo block on the night, ended scoring for the Toros to the much better tune of 25-20.

Despite the late set two surge, having only seven healthy players took its toll as CSUDH had no late-match comeback in the third at 25-13 with the final true point coming from a Hilary Hougardy service ace.

Once again the Toros dominated their opponent at the net with four total team blocks, giving UCSD only one.

Samantha Maxwell led the Toros at the net with two blocks while also leading the frontline offense with eight kills.  Hougardy followed through in the defense with 18 digs to add to her CCAA top-ten mark.

Overall the Toros' 25 kills were not enough compared against UCSD's 39, deciding the match at 3-0.

Now with a 1-21 overall record while recording 1-14 on the CCAA ledger, the Toros will next see action as they hit the road for Hayward, Calif. to face off against recent CCAA addition Cal State East Bay.  First serve is this Saturday at 7:00pm.
