Toros Lone Set Win Not Enough to Topple Visiting Warriors

Kayla Huckabee (right) gave a stellar performance with 5 total blocks

Carson, CA --- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team improved in every category as they battled the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus through four hard-fought sets, but eventually fell 3-1. Showing true improvement behind the net was Kayla Huckabee (shown, #16), who led the Toros defensively with 2 solo and 3 block assists.

After taking a loss in set one, 25-16, the Toros came back from behind in set two. Tied at 11-11, a kill from Ashley Clark propelled CSUDH into a six-point lead at 18-12. Though giving up four subsequent points, a Heather Rushton kill and Warrior attack error secured the win at 25-19, the first set CSUDH has taken in a CCAA match.

Riding the momentum into set three the Toros took an early lead and quickly jumped to their biggest lead at 21-13, thanks in part to three total blocks from Huckabee. However attack errors and Warrior kills from Lianne Vicchio and Jen Gee gave CSUS the push it needed to end the set at 26-24.

With the match still in their reach the Toros kept up in set four keeping pace to a score of 9-9, brough by a kill from Clark. With a kill, Vicchio again turned the set in the Warriors' favor to 10-9 and helped CSUS maintain its lead through the end of the set. Rushton gave the Toros their final kill of the game but a bad Toro set ended the set at 25-19.

The Toros were led in the offense by Madison Horsley with 10 kills, and closely followed by Marissa Anderson with 9. Rebekah Wolfgramm assisted with 31 sets while Hilary Hougardy posted 20 digs. Huckabee led with a total of five blocks.

CSUDH (1-13, 0-6 CCAA) will hit the road next weekend to face San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay on October 3rd and 4th, respectively. Both matches start at 7:00 pm.
