La Jolla, CA --- Coming off a loss to No. 21 Cal State L.A. this past Wednesday, the Toros remained winless in CCAA conference play as they faced host and No. 15 ranked UC San Diego. The Toros showed improvement in the toughest NCAA DII conference in America as once again they were led in the offense by Madison Horsley and Ashley Davison, both with three kills.
As they trailed close behind in set one, three consecutive points brought them within close range of the Tritons as the Toros forced UCSD to commit errors and bring the closest score to 11-9. However, two more kills by CSUDH's Davison and more forced errors were not enough as the Toros fell 25-15.
The Toros once again tried to regain lost momentum in set two as they held a lead of 18-17 after UCSD committed an attack error. However, despite subsequent kills from Heather Rushton and a well-timed service ace from Stacy Wilder, UC San Diego held on for a 25-22 set two win.
In set three CSUDH was unable to gain control as they fell 25-11, dropping the match, 3-0.
The Toros were led in the offense by Horsley and Davison, both with three kills apiece, with Horsley also gaining two assists for her efforts. Melissa Velasco held up the defense, posting 7 digs in the game.
CCAA conference play continues as the Toros (1-7, 0-2 CCAA) travel to face both Humboldt State and Sonoma State on September 19 and 20, respectively, with both matches slated for 7:00 pm starts.
