Toros Upset Bid of Coyotes Slips Away Late as CSUDH Falls, 54-50 to Cal State San Bernardino

Box Score

Carson, CA - The Toros played one of their best games of the season as they hosted the 3rd seed in the West Region in Cal State San Bernardino, but the Toros let late rebounds slip through their fingers as CSUSB held on for the 54-50 win.  Win the loss CSUDH falls to 10-10, 4-9 CCAA and moves behind Cal State L.A. for the eighth and final spot for the CCAA tournament.

It was a slow offensive day in the early going, with the teams deadlocked at 11-11 halfway thought the first half, but the Coyotes found their stroke from downtown and nailed three three-point shots to build a 20-13 lead with 6:27 on the clock.

The Toro post players decided to go to work down low as Alana Bailey, Ennisha Kyles, and Ashley Johnson chipped in buckets, while Jessica Liang hit a jumper to put CSUDH in front 21-20 with just 3:06 left in the half.

Coyotes CCAA MVP hopeful Vanessa Wilt ended the Toro run with a basket in the paint and scored a three-point play a few possessions later to give CSUSB a 27-23 halftime lead.

The second half would mirror the first with neither team able to get much breathing room, as the two squads would tie six times, the final at 46-46, for the eighth knot of the game with 5:03 on the scoreboard.

Wilt hit back-to-back jumper on consecutive Coyote possessions, but the Toros fought back and cut the deficit to one on a layup by Aujaneé Baldwin with 12 seconds left in regulation.

CSUDH fouled to send the Coyotes to the charity stripe and CSUSB obliged by missing the front end of the one-and-one, but CSUSB pulled down the offensive board and was sent back to the line.

After Krystal Urzua hit the first free throw and missed the second, CSUSB again beat the Toros on the glass and pulled down an offensive board to seal the victory.

Bailey led the offense with 15 points and seven rebounds while Johnson chipped in a career high 14 points, adding five boards in the loss.

CSUDH will next be in action tomorrow, Saturday, February 9, when they host Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
