LOS ANGELES – Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up its first win of the 2008 with a 11-3 non-conference victory over No. 17 Cal State L.A., riding a nine-strikeout performance by sophomore Bret Montgomery. With the win CSUDH improves to 1-4 on the season.
Max Moya slugged his first home run of the season for the Golden Eagles and drove in a pair of runs, while Christian Ramirez also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Nathan Pickett went six strong innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.
The game was tied at 1-1 after five innings. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Eric Quintero walked, Chris Lloyd picked up a bunt single and Joe Park sacrificed the runners over and reached first on an error by Montgomery. Ramirez lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in Quintero.
The Toros tied it with a run in the fourth. Alia doubled down the left-field line and scored on a one-out single by Chris Hunter.
Cal State Dominguez Hills then took the lead for good in the sixth. Puckett reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. Alia later scored on a run-scoring single by Pillar to make it 3-1.
The Golden Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2. Warmerdam reached second on an error, took third on an errant pickoff throw by Montgomery and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moya.
The Toros, though, broke the game open with two runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and four in the ninth. Puckett hit a two-run homer in the seventh, Flores hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Pillar had a two-run double to highlight the ninth inning.
Moya hit his home run in the bottom of the ninth for Cal State L.A. to complete the scoring.
The two teams will conclude the non-conference series tomorrow, Saturday February 9, with the twinbill slated for an 11:00 am start of Toro Field.
