LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team bounced back nicely from its first loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles got another outstanding start from Isaac Morales and pounded out 14 hits and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 11-6, in a non-conference game between California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (4-1) was coming off a loss to Azusa Pacific on Tuesday.
Morales (2-0) allowed only one hit and an unearned run in five strong innings on Thursday. In his two starts so far this season, Morales has allowed only three hits and an unearned run in 11 innings.
Joe Park had three hits and scored three times for the Golden Eagles, while Max Moya had three hits and drove in three runs. Tyler Warmerdam and Darrick Hale had two hits each for Cal State L.A.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-4) had 10 hits and made things interesting late in the game. The Toros got three hits from
Jeff Cullen (pictured) and three runs batted in from
Chris Hunter to highlight their offensive attack.
The Golden Eagles struck for three runs in the first inning to take a quick lead. Hale walked, stole second and went to third on a single by Tyler Warmerdam. After Warmerdam stole second, Max Moya doubled in a pair of runs. Nico Moreno singled in Moya to make it 3-0.
The Toros got a run in the second inning when
Jon Alia walked, took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Hunter's groundout.
Cal State L.A. added two runs in the fourth. Chris Lloyd walked with one out, stole second and third and then scored on a wild pitch. Park then singled up the middle, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Warmerdam to make it 5-1.
The Golden Eagles made it 6-1 in the fifth inning when Noe Flores smacked his first home run of the season. Cal State L.A. added another run in the sixth when Park and Hale both singled and Warmerdam reached on an error to drive in Park.
The Toros struck for three runs in the seventh.
Martin Conde walked,
Cody Puckett singled and Alia walked to load the bases. Conde scored on a wild pitch and Puckett came around to score on the play after a throwing error. Hunter drove in the third run with a groundout.
The Golden Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the inning. Lloyd, Hale, and Moya singled in runs and Henry Contreras was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the fourth run.
The Toros got two runs in the ninth to complete the scoring. Hunter doubled in one run and scored on a single by
Candelario Flores.
The two teams will meet again on Friday at noon at Reeder Field.
