Toros Trio Leads CSUDH Over Cal Poly Pomona, 61-47

Box Score

Carson, CA - The Toro trio of Ashley Johnson, Jessica Liang, and Alana Bailey all were in double figures and scored 46 of the Toros' 61 points to lead CSUDH over visiting Cal Poly Pomona, 61-47.  With the victory CSUDH improves to 11-10, 5-9 CCAA, while the Broncos fall to 9-11, 6-8 CCAA.

Cal Poly Pomona bucked out of the gate and jumped to a 6-0 lead on a jumper by Andrea Ohlssen, but Bailey broke the run with a basket down low, sending the Toros to the races.  After tying the game at 8-8 on another Bailey basket, CSUDH took its lead of the night with 12:10 on the clock on a baseline jumper by Johnson.

The lead would not last long as the Broncos' Neha Joshi hit for two on their next possession, and the teams would tie four more times with the final knot of the game coming at 25-25 on a trey by CPP's Ohlssen to close out the half.

The Toros came out of the locker room at the break inspired, clamping down on defense and hitting long-range bombs to kick off the second half with a 10-0 run, capped off by a bucket from senior Michelle Kribell.

The Broncos fought back, cutting the deficit to just two at the 8:47 mark, but CSUDH refused to break and extended its lead up to nine at 45-36 with five and half minutes left.

CPP tried to fight back again, but as time slipped away they were forced to foul, and the Toros knocked down their foul shots to finish off the Broncos.

Johnson set a new career high for the second night in a row with 18 points, while pulling down six rebounds.  Bailey chipped in her first double-double of season with 12 points and 10 boards and Liang added 16 points and five rebounds in the win.

CSUDH hits the road next weekend to take on Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego before returning home on Friday, February 22, to host Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
