Toros Open 2008 Campaign With Split on Day One of Best of the West Invite

vs. Seattle Univ.    vs. San Francisco State

Turlock, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills managed just two hits against fellow CCAA school San Francisco State in its second game of the Best of the West Invite, but a Kristin Tanaka (pictured) RBI single drove home Liz Vazquez with the game's only run as CSUDH bested SFSU 1-0 to improve to 1-1, one game after a four-run rally fell one run short in the 5-4 loss to Seattle University in the Toros' season opener.

Against the Gators, neither offense was able to put across any runs through the first five innings as the two teams combined for just five hits.  In the 6th, however, Vazquez began the frame with a walk, and proceeded to steal second one batter later.  Tanaka, then, belted a single up the middle to plate Vazquez, giving CSUDH starter Regina Farfan all the support she would need, as the junior retired six of the final seven batters to register her first win of the season.

In the opener against the Redhawks, the Toros dug themselves a 5-0 deficit after allowing three SU runs in the 1st, and two more in the 4th.  The game was all but put to rest as CSUDH batted in the bottom of the 7th, but after consecutive singles to start the frame, a Tanaka RBI single and Khryssi Steele RBI double cut the lead to just three, after which Mayra Oliden and Jodi Nakawatase both knocked in a run to bring CSUDH to within 5-4.  With two runners on and two out, SU pitcher Erin Martin induced a grounder to 3B, which ended the Toros rally just a run short.

Freshman Kaci Carroll got the nod and suffered her first collegiate loss, lasting four innings and allowing all five runs.  Tanaka again was the hitting hero with two hits as CSUDH fell in its 2008 opener.

The Toros continue the Best of the West Invite tomorrow with games against Notre Dame de Namur and UC San Diego.
