Pomona, CA -– Not even a 14-minute delay could stop No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday night. Once the Broncos match against visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills got underway, CPP fired at will and established a California Collegiate Athletic Association record in hitting percentage in a match.
The Broncos overpowered the Toros with a record .488 hitting percentage in their 3-0 win (25-20, 25-16, 25-13) before 488 fans in Darlene May Gymnasium.
The Broncos' mark of 44 kills, 5 errors and 80 total attacks surpassed the mark of .465 (49-9-86) set by Cal State San Bernardino against Chico State on Oct. 2, 2007.
The Broncos, who improved to 17-7 overall and 14-5 in the CCAA, rolled in Game 1 on the strength of 14 kills with one error in 23 attacks for a .565 effort. They gained speed in Game 2 with 14 kills and no errors in 24 attacks (.583). In Game 3, they finished the night with 16 kills with 4 errors in 33 attacks (.364).
The Toros, who are now 3-24 and 2-17, were led by Madison Horsley's six kills.
The match was delayed to the infamous Southern California rush-hour traffic that hit Cal State Dominguez Hills.
CSUDH closes out its regular season schedule on Saturday against powerhouse Cal State San Bernardino, with first serve set for 7:00 pm.
