Toros Fall to Cal State L.A. in 74-72 Barnburner

Box Score
Carson, CA -- In a game that saw 15 lead changes and eight ties between two teams located within 18 miles of one another, a missed lay-up with 0.6 seconds left in regulation sealed the Toros' fate in a 74-72 loss to cross-town rival Cal State L.A., leaving CSUDH at 6-5, 1-4 CCAA.

In a frenetic first half that saw eight lead changes and five ties, the visitors benefited from an errant Toro pass that led to a Christopher Mark dunk, giving Cal State L.A. an 18-11 lead with 13:36 left in the period.  Spurred by Jerrell Smith and James Cawthorne, however, CSUDH trimmed the lead to three a minute later, eventually knotting the contest at 21-21 on another Smith bucket, two of 10 points Smith poured in in the frame.

The Golden Eagles, however, would not relent, pushing their lead to four on two more occasions, before CSUDH scored 11 of the final 17 points of the half to take a 39-38 lead on a Mike Steedlay-up entering the break.

Exchanging buckets to bring the second half, CSUDH took its biggest lead of the game at 48-45 on a Rodney Yearby dunk, only to have CSULA's Demetrius Hazel knot the game again on a long 3-pointer.  After the two teams found themselves again tied at 55-55, a Tyler Polo trey ignited a 12-2 Golden Eagle run that saw them take the game's first double-digit advantage.

Two Danny Tavares (pictured) charity shots got the CSULA lead down to 67-61 with just over 5 minutes left in regulation, and two Steed foul shots and a dunk after a Steed steal brought CSUDH to within 72-70 with 54 seconds remaining.  Two successful free throws by Dejon Prejean gave CSULA breathing room with 13 seconds left, but another Steed bucket, this time with 6 seconds on the clock, gave the Toros one final chance.

After a CSUDH time out, the Toros forced one of their four steals in the contest, and regained possession with 0.6 seconds left.  With Jonathan Toliver inbounding and high-flying Jamaal Barnes streaking to the hoop, the Toros looked to tie the contest as time expired, but Barnes' attempt failed to connect, sending Cal State L.A. home with a hard-fought win.

Tavares wound up with 17 points and eight boards to lead three Toros in double-figure scoring, but CSULA's Prejean went for 20 and was bolstered by Vincent Camper's 17 in CSULA's win.

CSUDH shot 54% for the game while holding the visitors to just 44.4%, but the Golden Eagles, who improved to 8-4, 2-3 CCAA, turned 11 steals into a 17-13 points off turnover edge, making up for their field woes.  CSULA also was buoyed from beyond the arc with 10 makes in 25 attempts, while CSUDH suffered a 2-of-10 shooting night from 3-point land.

The Toros continue their first conference homestand of the 2008 calendar year on Friday as UC San Diego visits Carson for a 7:30 pm first tip.
