SAN BERNARDINO -- Sophomore guard Ashlee Ford sank four free throws and junior Rachel Johnson made two in overtime Saturday night to help lift Cal State San Bernardino to a 64-60 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a CCAA conference women's basketball game in Coussoulis Arena.
The two teams were tied 25-25 at the half and 55-55 at the end of regulation but the Coyotes outscored the Toros 9-5 in the five-minute overtime to improve to 10-1 on the season and remain in sole possession of first place in the conference at 4-0.
The Toros, picked in a pre-season poll to win the conference this season, dropped their second straight overtime game and their record is now 7-4 overall and just 1-3 in the CCAA.
CSUSB prevailed despite trailing 20-8 midway through the first half, but outscored the Toros 17-5 to knot the score at halftime and it was a donnybrook from then on.
Coyotes senior center Vanessa Wilt had a team-high 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her 11th consecutive double-double of the season. Johnson had 11 points to aid the CSUSB cause.
Brigayle Iglehart (pictured) had a game-high 25 points for the Toros while Jessica Liang had 12 points, sinking four of five shots from three-point range. Ennisha Kyles had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Coyotes won despite shooting just 29.7 percent (19 of 64) from the field and a horrific five of 32 (15.6 percent) from the three and just 54 percent from the foul line (21 of 39) but Johnson and Ford made them when they counted in overtime as CSUSB made seven of eight attempts in crunch time.
The Toros shot 34 percent for the game (19 of 56) and were seven of nine from long range (78 percent) but made just 15 of 27 free throws. The Coyotes outrebounded the Toros 55-43 and forced 21 turnovers.
To their credit, the Coyotes did not fold when Wilt fouled out with 3:27 left in regulation and the Coyotes leading 48-45. Iglehart's layup with 17 seconds left in regulation forced the overtime after Jaclyn Rainville gave the Coyotes a 55-53 edge with 27 seconds left.
CSUDH returns home for CCAA action as it hosts cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Wednesday, with first tip scheduled for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
