Pomona, CA -- Senior Vanessa Dominguez scored on a three-point play with eight seconds remaining in overtime as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeated CCAA favorite Cal State Dominguez Hills 72-69 in women's basketball Friday night.
With the game tied at 69-69, Dominguez hit a jumper from five feet and was fouled by the Toros' Aujaneé Baldwin. After a CSDH 30-second time out, Dominguez hit the free throw to give the Broncos the three-point cushion.
The Toros raced down court, but couldn't get a shot off in the waning seconds.
“To execute what we did down the stretch shows we're getting there,'' Broncos coach Scott Davis said. “Then, to come down on defense and not allow them a shot was huge.''
Dominguez finished with a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists as the Broncos improved to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 7-3, 1-2.
The Broncos earned their shot in overtime when freshman Reyana Colson scored on a driving layup with one second left in regulation to tie the game at 65-65. Colson held the ball just past the free throw line, and saw an opening down the lane.
The Toros led 65-61 when Diana Leasau (pictured) scored a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left. The Broncos' Ashley Moody scored on a jumper with the 19 seconds left to cut the lead to 65-63. Dominguez then fouled Alana Bailey, who would miss two free throws, setting up Colson's heroics in regulation.
In overtime, the Broncos built a 69-65 lead on field goals from Dominguez and Andrea Ohlssen with 4:13 left. But Leasau would score four more free throws over the next three minutes to tie the game. She finished with 11 points – all from the free throw line on an 11-of-12 effort.
Colson and Ohlssen each scored 17 for the Broncos, who now face Cal State Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Colson was 7-of-13 from the field, while Ohlssen had three 3-pointers.
Bailey and Leasau each scored 11 to lead the Toros, who will travel to Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow afternoon.
