Pomona, CA -- In a game where the largest lead was five points, Cal State Dominguez Hills made sure once it had the lead, it wouldn't let go. The Toros grabbed the lead with 14 minutes remaining and went on to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 50-47 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday night at Kellogg Gym.
Jerrel Smith's jumper with 14 minutes to go gave the Toros a 32-31 lead. Six times the Broncos cut the lead to one and the game was tied at 42-42 with 3 minutes remaining. But Cal Poly Pomona couldn't get the lead.
The Broncos were led by junior Larry Gordon and sophomore Donnelle Booker, who each had 10 points. Senior Kaelen Daniels had nine points with a game-high nine rebounds for the Broncos, who dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA.
Senior Danny Tavares (pictured) led the Toros, now 6-3, 1-2, with a game-high 15 points and hit a critical 3-pointer to keep the Toros out front. CSUDH held a one-point lead (45-44) when Tavares took a 3-point with the shot clock winding down. The ball hit the rim, bounced back up and dropped through with 42 seconds left.
Gordon answered Tavares' three with one of his own from the deep right side to draw the Broncos within a point, 48-47 with 25 seconds left. But Michael Hernandez hit a pair of free throws to push the Toros' lead to 50-47 with 21 seconds left. The Broncos had the ball with 10 seconds left, but Gordon turned the ball over as he was getting set to shoot a 3-pointer from near the same place he earlier scored.
CSUDH shot 38.8 percent from the floor (19-of-49), while the Broncos were 38.5 percent from the floor (20-of-52). The Toros outscored the Broncos from the free throw line, 10 to 4.
