Toros Win Third Straight in 88-65 Walloping of Chico State

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills changed its name to Cal State “Defensive” Hills tonight as it forced 30 Chico State turnovers while four Toros, led by a 20-point effort by Rodney Yearby, notched double-figure scoring totals as CSUDH raced to a convincing 88-65 win over a struggling Wildcat team that now has lost six-straight.

The hosts set the tone early with their intense defense, holding Chico State to just 9-of-29 in the first half.  After the Wildcats, now 5-11, 1-8 CCAA, scored the game's first two points on free throws and kept their lead at 10-9 with 3:59 elapsed, the Toros clamped down and used a 13-2 run to seize control of the game, led by Yearby's 10 points and eight by Jerrell Smith.  The Wildcats cut the lead to 7 at 26-19 on a Mike Martin layup at the 6:40 mark, but CSUDH again made an identical 13-2 run over the next five minutes to build its lead to 41-21 with 83 ticks left in the half, before settling for a 43-24 advantage entering intermission.

The second half was much of the same in the early going as CSUDH built a 23-point lead within the first two minutes, and led 51-31 with 14:34 left in regulation.  What was a blowout, however, quickly turned into a game thanks to four Wildcat free throws, a CSUDH technical foul, and three CSUC buckets, bringing the visitors to within 53-41 with just under 13 minutes left.

After seeing its lead trimmed to 57-48, however, the Toros regained their defensive intensity, again turning the contest into a blowout as their lead increased to 69-48 on a pair of Nonso Nibo free throws.  Following a Yearby layup and a Jonathan Toliver bucket, Nibo executed the highlight of the night by retrieving a Wildcat turnover in CSUDH's back court, dribbling the length of the court, and hammering home a thunderous one-handed jam over two Chico State players that sent the nearly 400 fans into a frenzy, capping what would eventually turn into a 23-point win.

The Toros' hawking defense caused 30 Wildcat turnovers, and led to a huge 44-to-24 points off turnovers advantage for the Cardinal & Gold.  CSUDH also used its athleticism around the glass as it tallied a 42-to-24 rebounding edge, led by Smith's nine and Yearby's eight.

On the night, CSUDH nailed 55.4% of its shots from the field while holding CSUC to just 38.2% for the contest as Smith (17), Nibo (10) and Michael Hernandez (10) joined Yearby in double figures, with Hernandez's points all coming via a perfect night at the charity stripe, which tied a 29-year and 362-day old Toro record for best free throw percentage in a game (Adrian Milow, 10-10 free throws on 1/28/78).

CSUDH, now 9-6, 4-5 CCAA, continues CCAA hosting duties tomorrow night as Cal State Stanislaus visits Carson for a 7:30 pm first tip in the Torodome.
