Toros Snap 3-Game Skid in 64-60 Win at San Francisco State

San Francisco, CA -- Junior Jerrell Smith's monster game of 16 points and 11 boards led the Toros to a hard-fought 64-60 win at San Francisco State tonight, snapping CSUDH's 3-game CCAA skid.  WIth the win, CSUDH moves to 7-6, 2-5 CCAA.

In the first five minutes of the game, the Toros outscored SF State 8-1.  They increased that lead to 23-13 on a jumper by Jamel Ward with 6:46 to go in the half. The Toros took a 30-21 lead into the locker room.

SF State started the second half outscoring the Toros 16-8 to cut into the visitors' lead 38-37 in the first six minutes of the second stanza.  CSU Dominguez Hills then went on a 6-0 run to increase its lead back to 7 (44-37) with 12:19 left in the game. SF State then outscored the Toros 14-6 in the next five minutes to take its first lead of the game 51-50 keyed by a four-point play by Phoenix O'Rourke and a three by Alex Thomas.

CSU Dominguez Hills then went on a 10-2 run capped by Rodney Yearby's tip-in with 4:34 left in the game to increase its lead back to 7 (60-53). SF State would not go away as the Gators cut the Toros' lead to three (60-57) with 3:31 on a Derek Fletcher lay-up. Back to back jumpers by Smith and Ward gave the Toros a 64-57 lead with just 1:35 on the clock.

SF State's Robert Hayes hit a three with 1:21 to cut the Toros' to 64-60, but the Gators could not get any closer as CSU Dominguez Hills shut down the Gators in the final 70 seconds to take a 64-60 victory.

Alex Thomas led the Gators with 15 points while dishing out five assists while Hayes chipped in 11 points and Fletcher had 11 rebounds to lead the way for SF State.  CSUDH's Danny Tavares added 11 points.

The Toros continue CCAA road action tomorrow night as they take on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, with first tip scheduled for 7:30 pm.
