Toros Volleyball Suffers Sweep to No. 9 Nationally Ranked UC San Diego

Carson, CA – The Toros' start to the 2007 season got even tougher as they faced No. 9 UC San Diego, which used a .391 team hitting percentage and 14 service aces to  sweep (30-13, 30-18, 30-25) the Toros.  Freshman libero Melissa Velasco garnered her third double-digit dig performance of the season with a game high 13 digs while the Toros are still searching for their first CCAA win of the season, falling to 1-9, 0-2 CCAA.

The Toros got out of the gates slowly in game one in falling behind 6-1, but rallied behind the serving of Lauren Wells to cut the deficit to one at 6-5.

After the two teams went back and forth, Lauren Bradley stepped behind the service line for UCSD and dropped back-to-back aces to extend the Triton lead to 11-6, and UCSD never looked back as they took game one 30-13.

Things started worse for the Toros in game two as libero Natalie Facchini served four aces as part of her nine-consecutive points to put UCSD up 9-0.

With CSUDH down 18-11, senior outside Sophia Lopes took the ball and unleashed her jump serve for three aces and seven points, cutting the Triton lead to just one at 18-17.

However, after a UCSD side out on the next serve, the Tritons fired back a strong jump serve of their own, courtesy of Rebecca Bailey with four points, with two coming on aces, after which Facchini closed out the game by serving the last six points.

With the scored knotted at 6-6 early in game three, the visitors used a three-point run behind the serving of Michelle Torres and a six-point run behind the serving of Sylvia Schmidt to build a 16-7 lead.

CSUDH cut the deficit on Velasco's serve by taking advantage of Triton errors and a pair of kills by Wells to come within four at 18-14, but UCSD quickly rebuilt its lead to six at 25-18 on a kill by Casey Wilson.

The Toros would not go easily and climbed back into the contest behind kills from Randi Johnson to cut the UCSD lead to three at 26-23, but the nationally-ranked Tritons held off the Toros to take the game and complete the sweep.

Wilson garnered game-high honors with 10 kills and a .455 hitting percentage with setter Elaine Chen dishing out 28 assists and Facchini picking up 11 digs and dropping five service aces in the win.

In addition to Velasco's game high 13 digs, Wells led the Toro offense with eight kills and two service aces, while Johnson added seven kills and Lopes chipped in five kills and 10 digs in the effort.

CSUDH will continue its homestand this Wednesday, September 12, when they host Hawai'i Pacific in a non-conference contest, with first served scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
