Carson, CA -- It helps to be both lucky and good. Although Cal State Dominguez Hills enjoyed a 28-8 shot advantage over visiting Biola University, it was an attempted clear gone awry that gave the Toros a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Eagles on Tuesday night, thanks to junior Yvonne Vasquez being at the right place at the right time.
The Toros, 3-0-1, dominated play from the outset, outshooting the Eagles 16-4 in the first half. Corrie Hirokawa had CSUDH's first chance with a one-on-one just minutes into the game, but BU keeper Lauren Gregston was up to the challenge, keeping the game scoreless. Just a few minutes later, the Toros tallied three shots on goal in a matter of seconds, only to come up empty.
CSUDH's aggressive offense finally paid off at 37:12 when Gregston attempted to clear the ball from her box, only to have Vasquez step in front of the outlet and ricochet it into the net for the game's first goal.
After intermission, BU had the first opportunity of the second half, but Kahlie Reinecki's left-footed bender from 25 yards out was speared by Toro keeper Alysia Barone, who was making the first start of her college career.
The Toros, however, would not relent as two Ashley Stewart attempts in a span of three minutes both nearly hit paydirt. In the 73rd minute, another forward in Kristen Boskovich dribbled through three BU defenders and found a streaking Hirokawa to her left, but Hirokawa's one-timer was deflected by Gregston, keeping the Toros up just one.
Just a minute later, freshman Kristan Boyle's blast from 30 yards hit the crossbar, but bounced directly down and into the hands of Gregston, who was kept busy with 14 credited saves on the night.
BU, which dropped to 1-2, had one final chance in the 88th minute, but an attempted header off a free kick was stopped just short of the goal. CSUDH's Stewart's inspired play led what seemed like 10 forwards on the field for the Toros, whose offense played at a frenetic pace the entire contest. The Toros enjoyed a 5-1 corner kick advantage and Barone notched 7 saves in her debut, while Hirokawa alone matched BU's shot attempts with eight on the night.
CSUDH begins CCAA Conference play with road games at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next weekend before a stretch of six-consecutive home contests beginning September 14, with a 4:30 pm first kick against San Francisco State in Toro Stadium.
