Toros Volleyball Upset of No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino Falls Short

Carson, CA – In a battle between two teams at the opposite end of the standings, the Toros put a scare into the No. 2-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes behind 20 kills from Ashley Clark and a double-double of 15 kills and a game-high 25 digs from Sophia Lopes as CSUSB took down CSUDH in four, 30-24, 24-30, 16-30, 21-30.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 2-16, 1-7 CCAA and CSUSB improves to 15-1, 7-0 CCAA.

The Toros raced out to a quick 5-0 on the No. 2-ranked team in the nation behind kills from Travette Pettigrew and Clark and multiple Coyote errors.

After CSUSB cut the deficit to three at 8-5, the Toros continued to press the Coyotes and extended their lead to 23-15 on a service ace by Tiffany Bull after a block assist from Marissa Anderson and Randi Johnson.

CSUDH continued its run and reached game-point on a service ace by Melissa Velasco, and after a Coyote sideout, Anderson put the game away to shock the nationally-ranked Coyotes.

Game two saw the Toros continue their pressure on CSUSB, and the teams were tied at 5-5, 7-7, 9-9, 10-10, and 11-11 before the Coyotes utilized a 6-1 run to build a 17-12 lead, looking like they were gaining momentum.

However, the Toros weathered the storm and chipped away at the CSUSB lead to knot the game at 19-19 on a Coyote attacking error.

After another tie at 21-21, the Coyotes found an offensive groove and Jessica Granados hammered three kills down the line off a back set down the stretch to seal the game two win.

After the intermission, CSUDH came out flat with a -.053 hitting percentage and it seemed as thought the tidal wave that the Toros were suppressing came crashing down as CSUSB quickly took the game 30-16.

In the fourth frame the Coyotes jumped out quickly and built a 19-9 behind seven straight service points by Sara Hoffman.

The Toros tried to rally late and cut the deficit to just five at 25-20 on a kill by Clark, but CSUSB had too much offense for the Toros to hold back as the Coyotes took the game and the match.

Jessica Granados led a quartet of Coyotes in double-figures with 19 kills, while Ashtin Hall, Sharea Drawn, and Jane Chafeh chipped in 15, 11, and 10 kills, respectively, with the latter adding 12 digs.  Libero Meghan Haas added a team-high 19 digs in the win.

Defensively, libero Jenise Espindola picked up 13 digs and recorded one service ace and senior setter Kayleigh Spratt added 38 assists to go with the offense from Clark and Lopes.

The Toros will next be in action Tuesday, October 2, for the 2007 CSUDH Volleyball Alumni game, with first serve scheduled for 7:30 pm.  CSUDH will then hit the road and take on Humboldt State at 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 6, in Arcata, CA.
