Rivas Shines in 13th-Ranked CSUDH's 2-1 Win Over 6th-Ranked Seattle Pacific

Senior forward notches both goals as CSUDH extends win streak over SPU to six

Box Score
Carson, CA – Senior forward Sammy Rivas scored both Toro goals in the 2-1 win over visiting and 6th-ranked Seattle Pacific, giving members of CSUDH's 2000 National Championship team who were in attendance a special treat on a cool and breezy Saturday night in Toro Stadium.

The Toros dominated the game from the start, tallying 11 shots to SPU's 2 in the first half.  Rivas had the Toros' first good look in the 15th minute, but a blast in front of the SPU net off a rebound sailed high, keeping the game scoreless.  CSUDH had another chance in the 37th minute as a Rivas-Andrew Marinez give-and-go found Rivas alone deep in Falcon territory, but his blast also went for naught to keep zeros on the board .  Two minutes later, however, Rivas put up the game's first score when, at 38:41, he took a deflection from SPU keeper Kellen Rosten and tapped in his shot far post for a 1-0 lead.

That's where the game remained until the 66:02 mark, when SPU equalized as Alec Nelson sent a lead pass to Cory Sinser, who beat CSUDH keeper
Derby Carrillo near side for SPU's first score.

SPU's momentum didn't last long, however, as just 69 seconds later, Rivas collected a through ball from Diego Turoldo, and flicked it pass Rosten for the eventual game-winner.

The Toros equaled their shot advantage in the second half, out-shooting the Falcons 22-4 for the game, also enjoying a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Rosten wound up with 7 saves on the night for SPU, which fell to 4-2-5, compared with 2 for Carrillo, who helped the Toros win their second-straight and ninth in their last 10 contests.

CSUDH's win also marks the sixth-straight time the Toros have bested Seattle Pacific in the two teams' storied history, while SPU stretched its winless streak to six games, the longest drought since 1970.

CSUDH, now 9-2 overall, hits the road for CCAA Conference play the next two weekends before returning home on October 19 to host Cal State Stanislaus for the second-to-last weekend of the regular season.
