Toros Volleyball Edged by Broncos in Cal Poly Pomona Sweep

Carson, CA - Freshman Ashley Clark led the Toro attack with 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona got the points when they needed it in edging the Toros in a close three-game game match, 30-18, 31-29, 30-28.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 2-15, 1-6 CCAA and CPP ends its losing streak at three while improving to 11-4, 4-3 CCAA.

After a Toro ball handling error to put the Broncos up 10-3 early in game one, the Toros settled down and chipped away at the deficit, utilizing a kill by Clark to come within three at 17-14, but the Broncos quickly responded and pushed the lead to 21-14 after a Toro attacking error, and continued its run to 25-15 until a kill by Schauna Porter temporarily stopped the Bronco momentum.

The two teams traded points over the next few serves before a Toro serving error gave the Broncos the game one win.

Game two was a tight battle early on, with the Toros holding a slight edge most of the way until a service ace by Antoinette Kathol gave the Broncos their first breathing room at 14-12.

The Toros played catch up until a block assist by Travette Pettigrew and Marissa Anderson, followed by a kill from Randi Johnson off a Bronco over pass, tied the game at 23-23.

The Broncos came out of a timeout and fired back with a pair of kills from Vanessa Williams to give it a comfort zone, only to have the Toros keep pace on another kill by Johnson off an over pass to re-knot the game at 25-25.

After ties at 27-27, 28-28, and 29-29 the Broncos finally were able to put away the Toros on back-to-back kills from Samantha Casey and Kathol.

The Broncos came out after the intermission and quickly built a 12-5 lead on a kill by Casey, but the Toros dug their heels in and cut the deficit to one at 15-14 behind the serving of senior Kayleigh Spratt and some strong swings by Clark, eventually taking its first lead since 3-2 at 17-16 on an Anderson and Johnson block assist.

A roll shot from the back row that just clipped the back end line by senior Tiffany Bull kept the Toros up one at 20-19, but the Broncos would not buckle, eventually building a 26-23 lead on a Toro attacking error.

CSUDH fought its way back into the game on back-to-back service aces by Jenise Espindola to knot the game at 26-26.

With the game knotted at 28-28, the Broncos Kathol and Jasime Davis rejected a Toro attack with a block assist, and Kathol hammered home the final point to complete the sweep.

In addition to Clark's 12 kills, Anderson chipped in a dozen kills while Espindola picked up 10 digs and recorded three service aces.

The Toros are in action tomorrow when they host No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino, with first serve scheduled for 5:00 pm in the Torodome.
