Toros Volleyball Downed by No. 20 Chico State in Four

Carson, CA - Senior Sophia Lopes led the Toro charge against their second nationally-ranked opponent this week in No. 20 Chico State with a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs, but the Wildcats were too much for the Toros as CSUDH fell in four, 17-30, 30-23, 23-30, 21-30.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 2-14, 1-5 CCAA and Chico State improves to 11-4, 4-1 CCAA.

Riding a wave of momentum from yesterday's first CCAA win of the season, senior Jenise Espindola started off things with an ace on the nationally-ranked Wildcats.

Chico State got back in the game and, after a Toro serving error, knotted the game at 7-7.

After trading points for the next few serves the Toros literally ran into a brick wall in Wildcat setter Erika Brick, who stepped behind the service line and scored 11 consecutive points to give Chico State a 23-12 lead, one they would never relinquish as the Wildcats held the Toros offense in check, limiting CSUDH to a .121 hitting percentage while hitting at a .368 clip.

After 11 ties culminating at 21-21 in game two, Travette Pettigrew and Marissa Anderson put a block on the Wildcat attacking to give CSUDH the lead at 22-21.

Melissa Velasco followed up with a ace and a Chico State attacking error gave the Toros a 24-21 lead.

Megan Cape hammered a kill for the Wildcats to cut into the deficit, but Randi Johnson and Anderson stymied the next Chico State attack with a block, and the Toros never looked back in taking game two.

After intermission both teams were locked in a battle and tied nine times with the last coming at 21-21.

With the game knotted Gillian Heydorff took a set from Brick to give Chico the lead at 22-21, and the Wildcats finished off the Toros to take game three.

CSUDH came out in game four ready for the Wildcat charge as the Toros countered everything Chico State threw at them, eventually deadlocking at 12-12.

However, the Wildcats seemed to push their game into another gear that the Toros couldn't match as Chico State outscored the Toros 18-5 down the stretch to take the game and the match.

In addition to Lopes' sixth double-double of the season, Anderson added her third double-digit kill performance of the season with 13 kills and five service aces.  Johnson continued her strong play in the middle for the Toros with a hitting percentage of .455, pounding down six kills and recording two block assists and one solo block.

Up next for the Toros is Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, September 28, and No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, September 29, with CPP beginning at 7:00 pm and CSUSB at 5:00 pm in the Torodome.
