Wells Near Triple-Double Leads Toros Volleyball to Five-Game Win Over Cal State Stanislaus for First CCAA Win of 2007

Freshman Lauren Wells just misses out on triple-double with 24 kills, 15 digs, and nine aces

Carson, CA – Freshman Lauren Wells just missed out on a triple-double with a herculean effort of 24 kills, 15 digs, nine service aces, and a .259 hitting percentage to lead the Toros to a five-game marathon win over visiting Cal State Stanislaus, giving the Toros their first CCAA victory of the season.  With the win CSUDH improves to 2-13, 1-4 CCAA and CSUS falls to 4-11, 0-5 CCAA.

The two remaining school looking for their first CCAA win of the season each came out hungry in game one, and were knotted 13 times before a kill by Randi Johnson put to Toros up one at 13-12, enabling CSUDH to ride that momentum to a 26-18 lead on a Warrior attacking error.

CSUS capitalized on back-to-back Toro attacking errors and a kill by Karly Van Foreken to bring the  Warriors back to within two at 26-24.

After a Toro time out, however, Wells ended the Warrior run with a kill off a set assist from Kayleigh Spratt, and Toros never looked back to take the opener.

Down 10-7 in game two, Wells stepped behind the service line and took control of the game, dropping four consecutive service aces on the Warrior libero to give the Toros their first lead of the game at 11-10.

The Warriors remained composed and rebuilt their lead to 22-17, but Wells again brought the Toros back with a pair of aces that bookended two kills from Sophia Lopes and a kill from the back row by Wells to knot the game at 22-22.

The teams remained tied at 25-25 before back-to-back attacking errors by the Warriors gave the Toros a little breathing room, and after a CSUS service error for the Toros' 28th point, Lopes jump-served an ace and Wells put away a set from Spratt to give CSUDH game two.

After the intermission, the Warriors lived up to their name and fought hard to take game three.

In the fourth frame the Toros looked to end the match with a 28-24 lead after a CSUS hitting error, but the Warriors again battled to tie the game at 29-29, eventually taking their first lead since 4-3 on a kill by Debbi Vander Schaaf.

After another tie at 30-30, CSUS used a kill by Megan Loghry and a Toro attacking error to complete the comeback and force a game five.

After switching sides with the Toros down 8-7, a Warrior service error knotted the game at 8-8, enabling Spratt to step behind the service line and jump float a pair of aces to give CSUDH the lead at 10-8.

Vander Schaff responded for the Warriors with a kill off a set from Colleen Sullivan to cut the Toro lead to 10-9, but after a CSUS ball handling error gave the ball back to the Toros, Wells recorded her eighth and ninth aces of the match to give the Toros the momentum they would ride the rest of the match to pick up their first CCAA victory of the season.

In addition to Wells' near triple-double, Lopes added her fifth double-double of the season with 20 kills and 23 digs and Spratt added her third double-double of the season with 42 assists and 11 digs.  Johnson chipped in 10 kills and hit .421, while the duo of senior Jenise Espindola and freshman Melissa Velasco picked up 17 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Toros resume CCAA hosting duties tomorrow when they host No. 20 Chico State, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
