Cal State L.A. Seizes Opportunities in 2-1 Win Over No. 13 Toros

Loss ends CSUDHs win streak at seven as Toros drop first conference game of season

Box Score
Carson, CA – Visiting Cal State L.A. turned two errors deep in Toro territory into two goals as the Golden Eagles halted CSUDH's seven-game win streak with a 2-1 win Friday night at Toro Stadium, also ending its scoreless game streak at three.

The Toros had the game's first scoring chance in the 3rd minute, but Jose Serpas' attempt on a 2-on-1 Toro break was shanked wide.  CSUDH found its second change in the 25th minute as Hiram Rangel got a cross from Sammy Rivas (pictured), but sailed his shot both high and wide to keep the game scoreless.

CSULA missed its first good look in the 32nd minute as a header went awry, only to have the Toros threaten just before the half as Julio Madrigal collected a cross, but his shot was smothered by CSULA goalie Tobias Hummel, keeping zeros on the board.

After intermission, Cal State L.A. took advantage of the first costly miscue as Morten Marthinsen picked up a failed clear outside the Toros' box, and beat CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo 1v1 for the game's first score.

The Toros thought they equalized two minutes later, but a collision between Jordan Rover, the CSULA keeper and a Golden Eagle defender that saw the ball roll into the Golden Eagle net was nullified by a caution on Rover.

Four minutes later, however, CSUDH capitalized on a CSULA error as an attempted clear from Hummel was blocked by Diego Turoldo, after which Rivas collected, dribbled and beat the keeper far side for the equalizer.

Things became urgent for the Toros in the 65th minute when Carmelo Terranova was issued his second yellow of the game, forcing the Toros to play a man down the rest of the contest.

CSULA, which improved to 6-2-2,. 4-1 CCAA, finally capitalized on its man advantage with just under three minutes left in regulation as Marthinsen stole the ball from a Toro defender and delivered a cross to Kyle Hewitt, who buried his shot past Carrillo for the game-winner.

In an evenly played and physical contest, the Toros outshot CSULA 15-14 and enjoyed a 3-2 edge in corners while a total of six cards were issued on the afternoon.

CSUDH, suffering its first conference loss in dropping to 7-2, 5-1 CCAA, continues its homestand on Monday with a non-conference match-up against Cal State San Marcos for a 7:00 pm showdown, before nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific visits Carson on Saturday, September 29, to conclude the Toros' six-game run in Carson.
