No. 13 Toros Run Win Streak to Seven in 3-0 Win Over UC San Diego

Sophomore keeper Derby Carrillo celebrates 20th birthday by posting sixth shutout in last seven contests

Box Score
Carson, CA – Cal State Dominguez Hills gave sophomore keeper and reigning CCAA Player of the Week Derby Carrillo a great birthday present by posting a 3-0 win over visiting UC San Diego Wednesday night in Toro Stadium to run its win streak to seven games.

The visitors, now 1-4-1, 1-3-1 CCAA, knocked on the door first in the 18th minute as David Bakal sent a blast through the heart of the zone, but Carrillo smothered his shot using his entire 6'4” frame.  The score remained zeroes until 27:38 when Scott Mariano delivered a 40-yard cross that played by UCSD keeper Peter Akman and right to a waiting Jose Serpas, whose header connected for a 1-0 lead.

After neither team was able to capitalize the rest of the half, Mario Guerrero sent a floater towards the Triton goal minutes into the second half, but it went untouched until Akman secured the ball and booted it away.  Minutes later, however, Guerrero rebounded a corner from Tibu Casillas and sent his second shot home for a 2-nil lead at the 56:01 mark.

The Toros continued their attack and again found paydirt in the 85th minute as Casillas crossed a perfect ball to Corey Prost, who one-timed it for the game's final score.

Carrillo again was magnificent in goal as he registered six saves to Akman's five.  After UCSD stayed close with five shots to the Toros' seven in the first half, CSUDH got in gear after the break and outshot the Tritons 16-4 while out-cornering the visitors by a 3-1 count as CSUDH posted its sixth shutout of the year.

The Toros, now 7-1, 5-0 CCAA continue their CCAA homestand on Friday as cross-town rival and Far West Finalist Cal State L.A. pays Carson a visit with first kick scheduled for 4:30 pm in Toro Stadium.
