Toros Up to Challenge in 2OT 0-0 Tie Against No. 2 UC San Diego

Freshman keeper Alyssa Congdon tallies 10 saves in defensive battle

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Freshman keeper Alyssa Congdon tallied 10 saves on the afternoon as Cal State Dominguez Hills and 2nd-ranked UC San Diego staged a defensive battle in a 0-0 double overtime tie Wednesday night at Toro Stadium.

The Tritons, now at 7-0-1, 4-0-1 CCAA, had the offensive momentum from the start, with a 6-1 first half shot advantage.  UCSD's first good look came in the 15th minute as Nicole Pepper eluded a Toro defender deep in CSUDH territory, only to have her point blank shot stoned by Congdon.  Five minutes later, Alie Avina's attempt went off a diving Congdon's hands, only to be cleared away by the Toro defense to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.

After intermission, CSUDH got its first real look as Yvonne Vasquez sent a cross to Kristen Boskovich a yard away from the goal, but Boskovich's header sailed both high and wide as the scoreboard continued to read zeros.  With the Tritons employing a full court press in the second half, Vasquez sent a through ball to a streaking Ashley Stewart, but Stewart couldn't get her shot past UCSD goalie Jessica McGovern.

As time wound down in regulation, UCSD launched a free kick in the 85th minute that hit the crossbar, and Ali Lai's 1v1 three minutes later was intercepted by Congdon.

After the first extra session yielded no advantage for either team, UCSD had its best golden goal opportunity in the 105th minute go for naught as Congdon punched Alexia Zatarain's blast up and over the crossbar to keep the tie intact.

Congdon enjoyed her best game of her freshman campaign as a Toro with 10 saves and great reads throughout the night, while the defensive efforts of seniors Sandra Lloyd, Fawna Waldo and Krista Rojas all played key roles in keeping the Tritons out of the net.

UCSD enjoyed 16-9 shot and 6-0 corner kick advantages while McGovern tallied five saves in the 0-0 contest.

The Toros, 5-1-3, 2-1-2 CCAA, continue CCAA hosting duties Friday night as cross-town rival Cal State L.A. pays Carson a visit, with first kick scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
