Offensive Toros Keep Cal State Monterey Bay Winless in 2-0 Win

CSUDH now prepares for 2nd-ranked UC San Diego on Wednesday

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Senior Corrie Hirokawa and junior Kelly Matosian combined for two first half scores, and that was plenty as CSUDH outshot visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 28-6 en route to a convincing 2-0 shutout on a hot and windy Sunday morning at Toro Stadium.

Hirokawa continued her fairy tale birthday weekend at the 3:33 mark, taking a 25-yard feed from a Monique Castro - Matosian connection and lofting her shot over Otter keeper Stacey Senkle's head for a 1-0 lead.

Amy Livergood had two chances over the next 20 minutes, but a header in the 10th minute hit off the crossbar, and her point blank attempt in the 23rd minute was deflected out of bounds, keeping the Toros up 1-0.

That would change at 26:53, however, as Matosian collected a rebound in front of the net and put it home far side for a 2-0 lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay had its best chance in the 75th minute, but a 1v1 by Danyell Cortopassi was stoned by CSUDH keeper Rachel Rood, keeping the Otters off the board.

With time winding down, the Otters made their final push in the 83rd minute, but Rood stoned Amber Spencer's point blank attempt to keep the shutout intact.

The Toros, who improved to 5-1-2, 2-1 1 CCAA, enjoyed a commanding 28-6 shot and 8-2 corner kick advantage over the Otters, now at 0-4, 0-4 CCAA, with CSUDH keepers Alyssa Congdon and Rood combining for the shutout win.

CSUDH continues its CCAA homestand with a 4:30 pm Wednesday contest against defending CCAA Champion and No. 2-ranked UC San Diego.
