No. 13 Toros Dominate in 4-0 Shutout Over Cal State Monterey Bay

Streaking CSUDH picks up sixth-straight win and fifth shutout in last six games

Box Score
Carson, CA – “Opportunistic” was the operative word for the Toros on Sunday afternoon as two of their six first half shots found the back of the net, providing enough offense in the convincing 4-0 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in Toro Stadium.

The visitors, who fell to 1-1-2, 1-1-2 CCAA, came out inspired against the 13th-ranked Toros as Andrew Burkhammer sailed a blast towards the CSUDH net in the 3rd minute, but Toro keeper Derby Carrillo used all his 6'4” frame to spear the attempt and nestle the ball safely into his hands, keeping the game scoreless.

That's where it remained until 13:59 when Sammy Rivas
(pictured) flicked a through ball to a streaking Jose Serpas, who proceeded to arch his shot up and away from CSUMB keeper Brenden Baca and into the net for a 1-0 lead.  After an offsides nullified what would have been CSUDH's second score, Humberto Lopez made the Toros' goal number two official at 29:01 by converting on a free kick from 20 yards out.

CSUMB had a good look just before the first half expired, but Burkhammer's header from 3 yards out was saved by Carrillo, giving the Toros a 2-0 lead entering the break.

As the second half opened, freshman Tibu Casillas gave the crowd a thrill as he took a loose ball just past mid-field and weaved in, out, around and through what seemed like the entire CSUMB defense before sending his blast past Baca for a 3-0 cushion.

The Toros, who enjoyed a 13-6 shot advantage after the half, added their final goal of the game at 87:56 as Rivas rebounded a save went askew after a Corey Prost shot attempt and tapped in the gimme to complete the scoring.

Carrillo made four saves on the day and notched his fifth shutout in six game as the Toros ran their win streak to six-straight.

The Toros, now 6-1, 4-0 CCAA continue their CCAA homestand on Wednesday as UC San Diego visits Carson for a 7:00 pm first kick in Toro Stadium.
