Phoenix, AZ -- Seniors Jose Serpas and Humberto Lopez both scored goals in a span of 25 minutes in a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon, giving the Toros their first win of the young season.
Outshooting the hosts 7-1 in the first session, Lopez instigated the first score with a feed to Serpas, and then took the scoring load on his own shoulders with a penalty kick conversion in the 40th minute to complete the scoring.
Lopez, who last season converted his lone PK attempt, again was successful against GCU on this night, giving the Toros a 50% conversion rate in 2007 after going 50% in 2006 (3-of-6).
Toro keeper Derby Carrillo earned the win while making one save as CSUDH enjoyed a 12-5 shot advantage and 5-2 corner kick edge in the contest.
CSUDH welcomes defending Far West Champion Seattle University to Carson on Sunday, September 2, in a rematch of last season's NCAA playoffs in which SU knocked the Toros out of the postseason in a shocking 2-1 overtime win. First kick is slated for a 6:00 pm start in Toro Stadium.
