Toros and Cougars Play to Double Overtime 1-1 Tie

Corrie Hirokawa notches CSUDH's lone goal to give her three scores in two games

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Senior Corrie Hirokawa continued her scoring surge by giving the Toros a 1-0 lead just 7:40 into the game, but visiting Azusa Pacific tallied the equalizer at 73:17 as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.

After APU keeper Jill Colfer-Martinson beat out Hirokawa for a 50/50 ball deep in Cougar territory, her outlet was intercepted by Kelly Matosian, who found Hirokawa 15 yards out.  The Torrance native then gathered, spun, and lofted her shot over Colfer-Martinson's head and into the goal for a quick 1-0 lead just under eight minutes into the contest.

The visitors had a golden chance to equalize at 36:53 when they were awarded a penalty kick after a CSUDH foul inside the box, but Toro keeper Rachel Rood stoned Katie Rorabaugh's attempt cold, keeping the Cougars off the board.

That's where the score remained until the 73rd minute when Rorabaugh exacted a bit of revenge and knotted the game at 1-1.  After an APU free kick, Rorabaugh took a feed from Sarah Yoro and headed it past Alison Bosler, who entered for the Toros after the break.

With just 13 minutes left in regulation, Hirokawa set up Melissa Livergood with a perfect cross, but Livergood's header sailed just wide, keeping the score at 1-1.

In the first extra session, the Cougars looked to put the game away by blasting two point-blank shots at Bosler, but the stingy Toro defense deflected both shots, setting up the second overtime.

Both teams continued to press in that frame, and Hirokawa's final attempt as time expired sailed just over the crossbar, cementing the 1-1 tie.

The Toros outshot the Cougars 26-20, including 9-6 in the overtime sessions, while Colfer-Martinson tallied 6 saves to a total of 3 by the CSUDH tandem.

CSUDH travels to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon on Thursday, before returning home on Tuesday, September 4, as Biola visits Toro Stadium for a 7:00 pm kick off.
